about us

What We Believe

1.  The Bible is the inspired, "God-breathed" Word (2 Tim. 3:16), meaning God divinely influenced human authors to record His message accurately. This word "inspiration" indicates that every word, not just the ideas, is authoritative, inerrant, and purposefully crafted by God. It is the final authority for faith and conduct.  2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2. All Have Sinned: Romans 3:23 ("For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God").  "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23 KJV) is a foundational Christian doctrine stating that every human being is inherently sinful and fails to meet God’s perfect, holy standard. This universal reality highlights that no one is better than another and all need salvation by grace, which is provided freely through faith in Jesus Christ.

3. The Penalty of Sin: Romans 6:23a ("For the wages of sin is death").  "The wages of sin is death" is a biblical phrase from Romans 6:23 (KJV/NIV), indicating that the penalty or "earnings" for disobedience to God is both spiritual and physical death. It serves as a contrast to the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Death in this context implies separation from God, brokenness, and the consequences of sin nature.

4. Romans 6:23b ("but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord").   Based on Romans 6:23, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, offered freely by grace rather than earned through works. While sin leads to spiritual death, God provides salvation as a free gift to believers, representing a contrast between deserved judgment and undeserved, loving mercy found in Jesus.

5. Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  "While we were yet sinners" refers to Romans 5:8, highlighting that God demonstrated His love by having Christ die for humanity not when they were righteous, but while they were still in their sins, ungodly, and separated from Him. It signifies that God's grace is undeserved, unconditional, and initiates reconciliation.

6. Romans 10:9-10 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.  According to Romans 10:9-10, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. This act combines inward faith (believing in the heart) with outward affirmation (confession), signifying a personal commitment to Jesus as Lord.

7. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: This is a summary of the "Gospel", which includes believing in the death, burial, and physical resurrection of Jesus Christ!

8: John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. This is the main theme of the Bible.

Our History

The Renaissance Baptist Church of Detroit was organized in June of 1982 by 330 former members of the Second Baptist Church. Our founding Pastor was the late Robert F. Holloman, Jr. We worshipped at the Burns Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church for one year. The prayer breakfast and dedication was held in October of 1982.

The first elected officers were: Joel Hackett; chairman of the Deacon Board; Michael Patterson, chairman of the Trustee Board; Ada Staples, church treasurer and Athal Watts, church clerk. Minnie Johnson was elected as Superintendent of Sunday School; Gwendolyn Johnson, organist, Sheila Davis, pianist and Willa M. Boyd, church secretary. William Maxwell became the organist in September 1982.

We marched into our present church building in June of 1983. Through the generous pledges, tithes and offerings of our members we were able to bum the mortgage while celebrating our fifth anniversary on June 7, 1987. We experienced a steady growth in church membership and community involvement with Rev. Holloman as pastor.

Renaissance has been and continues to be an active force in our community ministering to the homeless, senior citizens and children with programs such as Housing the Homeless, Vacation Bible School, projects with Jones Elementary school ,delivery of food baskets and clothing drives. We have endured many ups and downs during our church history, including changes is administration. Rev. Robert Paige served as acting pastor and Rev. Jerome Stevenson served as pastor during the illness and death of our founding pastor Rev. Robert F. Holloman. Throughout this entire time period, Rev. Dale Weathers remained a faithful and loyal associate pastor.

On May 19, 2002, Rev. Edwin H. Holmes was elected as the third pastor of Renaissance Baptist Church. He has truly been a blessing to us in the brief time that he has served as pastor. We have again experienced growth in membership under the leadership of Dr. Holmes.

God's grace and mercy brought us through. We are living this moment because of you. We want to thank you and praise you too. God's grace and mercy brought us through.

Our Mission and Vision

Luke 4:18-19 (KJV)

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Our vision is to Engage, Enhance and Empower believers to continue learning

from a biblical perspective and to assist our communities by being a voice for the voiceless.
